Its parent organization is one of the oldest public arts institutions in the United States, the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, which was founded in 1862. Tracing back to its history, the construction of Albright-Knox Art Gallery for the Academy began in 1890, under the supervision of John J. Albright, an entrepreneur, industrialist and philanthropist in Buffalo. Designed by Edward Brodhead Green, a prominent local architect, the building was initially intended to be the Fine Art Pavilion for the section for the Pan-American Exposition. However, the construction was delayed in 1905 and the building remained incomplete. Later in 1962, the construction was resurrected by the contributions made by Seymour H. Knox, Jr. As new additions were made, his family and other donors contributed to the completion of the building and it was renamed to its present name, Albright-Knox Art Gallery. During this time around, the design of the building was done by architect, Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, who is famously known for the Lever House in New York City.
