How does one turn a talent into a career?
From the time I was a small child, when it came time to select gifts for family or friends I seemed to have a good eye. In fact, even as a really young kid people would comment on how perfect or special a choice I'd made for someone's gift. Later people sought out my suggestions for the gifts they wanted to get for their friends. Logically, I became a buyer. Mostly antiques which I resold to store owners/dealers. Later, I did wardrobe and housewares for individuals. I've continued to enjoy my personal client's praise and felt proud to be a part of the success that some business clients have had.
But this not my dream. HERE'S my dream:
I'd like be a set buyer/dresser for television and movies. These are the folks who manifest an art director's vision of the details which create the background sets. Buyers purchase the small details we glide past while enjoying a film - the books, desk top items, nic-nacs around the room, etc.
Does anyone know how to pursue that career?

While I have no direct expertise in this area, I do know that the advertising industry is playing a continually larger role in the furnishing of sets.
I have a nephew, now working as an account manager for a major firm in Manhattan, who spent a few months tasked with placing the client's beer brands on sitcom bar tables, for instance. He would literally drive up to sound stages and give a few cases to the crew members, knowing they'd put the left-overs into scenes whenever called for (they have to be half-full, after all).
And before you say, "Yeah, but that's easy --a consumable, and one that gives you a buzz to boot," think of all the scenes you've watched that you were certain you'd seen before in that Pottery Barn glossy that fell into your lap while trying to find something, anything about sub-Saharan election results amidst all the local spin in your "news" paper.
My advice? Get to know product-placement folks (I can find some through my nephew), and get to know production designers (you're on your own there), and become the broker between them.
(In return for this wisdom, could you suggest something that would give my simple, suburban, war-time cottage more of "tree-house" feel?)
