Stepping out to a great future
An average adult will walk in the region of 180 000 kilometres in a lifetime, so to make sure the first steps are healthy ones in the right direction, the choice of baby shoes is important.
Many people are amazed to find out tht a foot has 26 bones and 35 joints, which are supported by lots of different ligaments. However, a baby’s foot only has 22 of these bones, with the rest developing slowly throughout childhood. And because an infant’s foot bones are formed of soft, pliable cartilage, they are more susceptible to damage and need proper care and protection, particularly from baby shoes.
Babies will start to walk when they are ready – mainly between eight and 18 months of age and it’s been estimated that a baby who has just started walking will take around 170 steps a minute. That's a long way for a baby to travel, so it's important that baby's shoes do the job properly!
Just how does one go about choosing the right baby shoes ?
Kids' shoes should always be soft and should bend easily.Leather is by far the best choice, and See Kai Run makes hand-crafted kids shoes from soft-as-butter sheepskin leather with soles of flexible rubber.
Based in the US, See Kai Run manufactures baby and children's shoes to the highest international functionality and health guidelines, and carries the prestigious seal of approval from the American Podiatric Medical Association. See Kai Run now has a dedicated website for Australia and New Zealand, so ordering fun, funky and functional baby and children’s shoes online is done in a few easy…. steps !
Children's shoes should not be tight, but should be comfortable as well as secure. To allow for growth, there should be a one to two centimetre gap from the end of the toes. You should check this often, as children’s feet grow quickly and their shoes may need updating every few months. If shoes don't fit properly, children could develop foot problems later on.
It is also important to ensure that the child’s foot doesn’t slip in the shoe, which could damage toes and heels.Open sandals should be secured by a strap over the instep and closed shoes should have comfortable, pliable collars for support.
Soles need to be flat and flexible, particularly under the ball of the foot. The heel cup of kids' shoes should fit firmly and comfortably but not tightly, with the foot supported by the shoe's straight inner edge.
Shoes should not have a pointed toe which would restrict freedom of movement.
See Kai Run has a huge range of children’s shoes for all seasons, with three specially designed ranges, one for babies from 0 – 18 months, another for younger children from 3 – 8 years, and the ‘Eleven Collection’ for bigger kids up to 11 years.
Children’s feet only develop fully when they reach 16 to 18 years of age.So whether it's little steps or giant strides, making the right choice of kids shoes at the very start will get everyone onto the right footing.
