Printing Large Format Posters
Poster printing has a long and rich history. Used by artists and propagandists, advertisers and PR gurus. Printed posters can tell a story on a single sheet of paper. And you see them everywhere you go from the side of bus shelters to train stations.
But how much should poster printing cost and which format has been found to be the most effective?
Small posters don't really work:
The first thing to know about the printed poster is that it should be big. Ideally very BIG!
No one takes notice of an A5 poster. That's just a humble flyer. At the larger A4 size your poster is still nothing more than a leaflet.
But go larger and you start to make an impression, but only just.
Most people think that an A3 poster might start to do the job. That's two A4's alongside each other. But on reflection and once you stand back a few paces, you quickly come to notice that it barely registers on the eye. If you are in retail and you want to check this out. Stick an A3 sized poster in your shop window and you'll quickly notice what I mean. It will appear to disappear to the passer by. Now that is not much use.
So how big do you need to go to get your printed poster noticed?
Well I reckon that A2 (that's 2 A3 sheets of paper alongside each other. Or 4 A4's) is about the minimum that works for a poster. It's not giant, but with a bit of clever design it does just start to register with the casual passer by.
But if you really want to stop someone in their tracks then go BIGGER still with your poster printing.
I personally recommend the B1 printed poster format.
What is B1 poster printing? Well to be precise it's 707mm ? 1000mm. To put that into real money it is the equivalent of 8 sheets of A4. In other words a B1 size poster is sure to get your message noticed.
Now the reason that not too many people know about the B1 size poster secret is that there are relatively few printing companies in the UK who own presses of this size. The standard tends to be a press called the Heidelberg 74 or similar and that can only print B2 size posters. The bigger impact B1 Poster will require a Heidelberg 102 printing press. The 74 and 102 both actually refer to the imperial inches measurement.
How much should a B1 Poster cost to print?
The answer is that it will almost entirely depend on how many you are producing. Shortly runs of posters, perhaps up to 10 or 20 are often best printed on digital poster printing machines. Many of which do go up to the B1 poster format we have been discussing - and beyond to B0. But if you are in need of say 50+ B1 Posters then litho printing on a large format press is going to be dramatically more cost effective.
With traditional litho printing all the cost is in setting up the poster printing run, so rather than producing 50 B1 Posters you might just as well print 100 or even 1,000. It quite literally will not cost much more to have those larger quantities of posters printed because the run on cost comes to nothing more than a bit of paper and the ink required to print your posters. Oh and 10 minutes more on these giant printing presses.
So there you have it. Get yourself B1 size posters printed if you want to be noticed. And get plenty of them printed because it really will not cost noticeably more than getting 10 of them.
