Frequently Asked Questions...
How big can my image be printed before it looks grainy?
How do you know if an image can be enlarged to a poster size, for example, A1 or A0 size. I have a few images that I'd like to have enlarged, but I don't know if the image is crisp enough.
Does it depend on the number of pixels? How do I tell that from looking at the file?
AND, if I TAKE a photo with this in mind, how can I ensure it's good enough quality to get enlarged later?
The more pixels you have, the better quality the picture and therefore the larger you can have the print without it looking grainy.
Here's a rough guide:
5 MP = 2592 x 1944 pixels
High Quality: 10 x 13 inches
Acceptable Quality: 13 x 19 inches
4 MP = 2272 x 1704 pixels
High Quality: 9 x 12 inches
Acceptable Quality: 12 x 16 inches
3 MP = 2048 x 1536 pixels
High Quality: 8 x 10 inches
Acceptable Quality: 10 x 13 inches
2 MP = 1600 x 1200 pixels
High Quality: 4 x 6 inches, 5 x 7 inches
Acceptable Quality: 8 x 10 inches
And so on.....
You should be able to tell the amount of pixels in the file saved on your computer.
You would just about squeeze a good quality A2 print from a 12MP camera... don't forget though, when viewing a larger picture you generally stand back, therefore any graininess is much less noticable.
Hope this has helped
