Graphic Design: Is It Art, Or Is It Not?
As the 19th century was drawing to a close, graphic illustrators incorporated pattern, shape and design into their art. One man who had a major impact on popular design of that time was Aubrey Beardsley. Beardsley became a motivating force that created art and architecture that is highly valued even to this day, all before his death at the age of 26. Even though his lifetime was short, he managed to develop his very own, highly personalized, interpretation of the entire art nouveau style which many artists have been trying to duplicate at various times throughout the 20th century. Among the most significant and misunderstood literary characters of the day was Oscar Wilde, who promoted the merits of a wide range of artistic styles, as he felt that the art should be considered its own end and should not simply be considered for ethical or moral merits. This was the certain artist chosen by Wilde to create the illustrations for a literary piece that was simultaneously avant garde and disturbing. The tale was illustrated in fantastical patterns, sweeping lines, and eroticism somewhat threaterning in its design.
His work often illustrates the interaction between black and white. Wilde applied large borders of black to provide variance with dainty patterns frolicking on a surface of white. His page is typically asymmetrical; movements are developed with big, not broken sinuous curves. Oscar places figures in his renderings constructed of simple outlines. However, the figure's hairdos are intricate and elaborate. The items the figures hold are complex as well. His work is characterized by a force that results from the juxtaposition of the basic and the ornate.
The Japanese imports, along with a renewed appeal of early Renaissance decorating and Medieval Arts, proved to be the inspiration for a number of designers at the close of the 1800's. Artists from both the United States and Europe imitated Beardsley's illustrative style which was popular outside his native England through its repeated appearances in a number of famous publications. By the late 19th century, poster art began to emerge as an art form in its own right. What was once a simple means of promotion and advertising was now taking the stage as a recognized form of art. During this time period, books were solely in black and white. However, posters had begun to be produced in color as well. The leaders of most poster designs started focusing on a large, eye catching image with bright colors. Informative text regarding the item or event in question were as short as they could be. Yet a different successful and well known art nouveau designer's posters always proved to be elegant, narrow strips with typically one entire length female figure. The intricate patterns were inspired by many diverse cultures such as Celtic motifs, Japanese wood cuts, Hebrew lettering, Arab and Moorish decorations, Byzantine mosaics and simple fold art.
Talented turn of the century graphic designers produced many drawings which can now be seen in reprints and books, if you look for them. Many dealers specialize in collecting and selling posters from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Typically they put up tables at big international style antique shows. An original work in good condition will generally set you back hundreds or thousands of dollars.
